Factory fuel line routing on 73 Z1

#1 PostAuthor: Luvolbikes » Sun Feb 02, 2020 12:32 am

Was the factory fuel line routing as follows? Hose from front petcock outlet straight down to common float bowl inlet for cyl 1,2. Back cock outlet hose straight across and down to common 3,4 inlet. I have fuel filters on it now but I`m just curious how it came from the factory since the 1,2 hose has to bend 90 deg directly out of the cock to track down to the inlet and it crimps the hose to do so. What say you? Thanks.

Can't help with the pre '76 bikes, but the Z900-A4's had a fuel tap with two outlets. One of these outlets, (the front one) exited the tap pointing forwards while the rear one exited pointing towards the centre of the bike. This lent itself to simple, straight ish pipe routing. Like you describe, the forward pointing outlet to carbs 1 & 2 & the rear outlet to the carbs 3 & 4.
I would assume this is how the earlier Z1, A & B were.

Later replacement OEM fuel taps changed in so much as both outlets pointed towards the centre line of the bike & consequently made routing the pipe to carbs 1 & 2 less than ideal. It's quite possible pattern fuel taps are like this too.

Thanks for the reply. Having the front outlet direct the line more in the direction of the carb inlet would have been a good idea. I have not seen a Z1 petcock either repro or OEM that looked like that. Hopefully someone with a 73 or perhaps later Z1 will jump in and straighten this out for me.

This is the tap on my A4, which is the original item.

Awesome. Thanks for the picture. I have not seen that before having a Z1a and a Z1R. Neither one has your Petcock. Maybe someone else with Z1 with original petcock will also send a pic. I'm trying to keep the bike as original as possible for collectability reasons.

Here are the photos out of the manual for a 74 Z1A, looks like they both go straight out the back of the tap and the fuel line goes in between the first 2 carbs and the last 2.
I have a 75 Z1B and this is how they are on it..

That's what I'm looking for. Is there a problem with crimping in the 1,2 carb hose as it bends acutely downward. Perhaps the material the line is made of resists crimping. Thanks.
