advise on custom rim on rear hub

Hi all
I have a question about putting custom rims on my Z650.
I have a front hub already laced with stainless spokes onto a 2.15x18 alloy rim.
I purchased a , supposed, z650 rear wheel but when I got it it was 36 spokes.
I suspect that this is a GS550 drum rear wheel.
The spoke count is not a problem ,actually I have 2 rear rims .
First is a 3.5x 17 and second is a 4.25x17.
My question
Is there a safe maximum rim width for these older hubs.
I know that chain clearance may become an issue though I can offset the hub to rim slightly.

Why 17 inch rear wheel rim ? are the spoke angles on the rim correct for the hub. Has the bike got a drum brake or disc ?
Governing factor on rear rim width normally depends on physical width of tyre for the swing arm you have and being able to run chain straight past tyre with reasonable tolerance.

Hi adrian.
Two reasons for 17 inch wheel.
First is I already have it

and second I am a short arse and it means I can get my toes down without loss of suspension travel.
My z1000st has the forks dropped by 35mm and shorter rear shocks .
Bike is a drum model z650f3.
I have a Zephyr arm I want to fit to it so clearance is less of an issue.
The spoke pattern looks the same on all the rims , though I have not unlaced the 3.5 rim yet.

I have a z1000a1 rim laced to a 4.5 rim and another to 6" so I think you'll be fine with a 4.25.

Apologies - I was just surprised that you'd want to use 17" rims.
Width of rims should not be a problem.
Wheel rims are usually made so spoke holes are aligned to the spoke holes within the hub. Not sure if this is a problem (hopefully not) ?
Good luck. Adrian

Just a note - may or may not be relevant
If you measure
height of wheel of a std 19" against a modern 17" wheel (with tyres fitted), there ain't much difference due to tyre aspect ratio.

Thanks all .
I will need to find some custom ss spokes then will call in a favour for a respoke.
Thinking about it I think the 3.5" rim will suit me fine.Dont need monster wide tyres.
Regards
Craig

Hi, I found Hagon the most useful for supply of stainless spokes.
They were flexible enough to provide individual spokes even.

Now that is what I want.
What I end up with however may be a different story.
So far i have got 2 front wheels the previously mentioned 18x2.15 front (40 spoke) a 19x1.85 Kz1000M1(48 spoke) and the rear drum rim (36 spoke).
buying on a whim from ebay has a lot to answer for
