Z900A4 Snapped chain - Casing damage

#1 PostAuthor: NickH » Thu Apr 23, 2020 4:44 pm

Sooo - just after finishing my restoration (the chain looked new as do the sprockets!) on a little ride out for my, er "essential groceries" - I have a snapped chain. as you might expect, there's damage to the inner casing around the front sprocket.

The top section of this casting has been ripped off, and also a portion of the upper back section, which exposes a few holes that look like they're channels for securing bolts.

I was considering not bothering to replace this casing, however, one of the holes to the upper left (which I assumed to be a bolt recess, but there's no thread inside it, and none of the outer casing bolts align with it - so it's like a clutch pushrod hole, without the pushrod!)

Ordinarily, I wouldn't worry about this, but on running the engine, oil pisses out of this hole. So, a partial success, then.

So - does anyone know

a) What this 5mm hole is
b) Whether I can just seal it off (I cannot see what function it performs - seems just an empty channel.)
c) If it's possible to get a replacement inner casing - the one that goes behind the front sprocket. In my Kawasaki manual, it's referred to as an "External shift mechanism cover"

I assume these covers are like rocking horse shit, due to machine age, and 40 odd years of snapped chain damage to the original stock.

All suggestions welcome - thank you guys.

Nick

As above, I'd want to know why the chain let go in the first place.

Hi Nick
maybe a stupid question: is the master link riveted or can you open the link by removing the little closing clip ( "fish")?
If the master link is removable mind the direction of the closing clip, the closed portion has be installed in the direction of the chain movement, not the other way !
