1982 Z1000J carb woes
Hi.
A couple of questions please:
Does anyone know the tap size that would be required to chase the thread on the fuel/air mixture screws. Unfortunately I had two that had been welded in the carb bodies. I carefully drilled them out and saved one but messed the other one up.
Is there a better set of carbs to fit that are readily available (not new, budgets already blown!!) and not so bloody fussy.

Cheapest, quickest, easiest and safest route out of this is buy another set and that will give you a load of spares for the future.
Assuming these are the same (there are a good few different versions that look the same) this is the cheapest set on ebay just now.
£200 and it might be worth mentioning that the diaphragms alone are £50 each!!!

If the bike isn't standard get some normal "slide" carbs instead maybe - much simpler to tune & service.
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Thanks for the reply. It might be my only option and as you say try to make a good set out of the pair.
Bloody pain as the rest of them cleaned up OK after an ultra sonic bath. They even run off choke now.

Is there a "slide" carb that bolts straight on.

Ideally you could go for Mikuni RS34's

They look the mutts nuts, but unfortunately the budget does not allow at the mo. My hole in the ground is nearly full!!!

Has anyone ever managed to get the air mixture hole repaired? I have cleaned up the remains of the holes and can get the two screws to screw down but not far enough. Handy if it was one and a quarter turns out...I will carry on messing as the rest of the carbs seem ok.
I don't suppose any one has a set of either BS34 ( I believe) or as mentioned RS34's spare they wish to sell.

Just found this. It's a bit confused in places but has some nice diagrams and may be of some help further down the line.

Top the cheapest, bottom the most expensive, all of them will require setting up to suit the bike and J2 type inlet rubbers (big ones)

Suzuki A/C big fours soacing of carbs is same - so GS GSX range is an option

Bandit/GSXR/GSXF carbs fit but need a Stage 3 Dynojet kit to work with pod filters, they might work okay with the airbox - I don't know
CV carbs form GS1000s and GSX1100s are nearly the same as Z1000J carbs apart from 1100EFEs which have 36mm CV carbs which are very sort after, all of these can be made to work with pods with air correctors.
If you aren't too bothered about performance 32mm CV carbs from various 550 - 850 Suzukis work and are a lot cheaper and easier to find than 34mm CVs
I was talking to Chris Tombleson about this very subject on Monday and most of the above is what he told me

This is great help, thank you all. I will do some investigating and check out the flow diagram. It would be good to get my BS34's working and reliable but if not I will have to put up and shut up and get an alternative, so thanks for the list.
The need has ramped up as my paint guy contacted me today to collect my panels tomorrow....

Just bear in mind, CV carbs can be a real pig to tune!

But any of the other options would still need tuning for this specific application ?
If you can get the CV34s to work then they are a very good carb for all situations.

i have a minty clean, ready to rock set of J cv34's if you want to keep std? better than any of the ebay offerings listed, probably not cheaper than most of them, but they'll all need a wedge thrown at them before you can get a tune out them i reckon. mine have unobtainable NOS diaphragms n needles fitted (under 2,000 miles)
