Manual Camchain adjuster

Hi Chaps,
I would be interested to know what members think in the best method to get the correct camchain tension when you have a manual adjuster such as the APE type etc ?

You can either do it with the cam cover off so you can see the slack being taken up in the chain or get a 17mm spanner on the ign side crank nut and rock the crank whilst screwing in the adjusted by hand.
Whilst rocking the crank you will feel the slack being taken up.

Just to interject (sorry Rob), if it's a J-model onwards don't set your camchain tension with the cam cover off or you'll overtightened the chain when you refit the cover as the top guide pushes on the chain.

On my '81 J I follow the standard APE instructions, tightening the tensioner by hand whilst turning the motor over with a 17mm socket (plugs out, of course) until I feel a resistance, then back a flat and nip the locknut. Then, I do it by feel as described in this post: -
