Z1-B grab rail indicator mounts?

#1 PostAuthor: steve452 » Sun Jun 21, 2020 4:27 pm

Although I can't find a photo of one the same, my Z1-B's grab rail has two welded 'tangs' on it with diamond shaped cutouts the same as the indicator mounts on the frame. These tangs obscure the frame cutouts so I'm assuming that the indicators must mount on the tangs on mine. I have a late Z1-B (registered in April 1975) so am guessing Kawasaki modified the design, possibly to reduce vibration to the bulbs. I can't find any mention of it in Dave Marsden's "Original Kawasaki..." book either. Can anyone confirm whether this is correct?

UK/Euro indicators mounted on grabrail - US mounted on frame.

Something to do with vehicle regs and the distance between lights and indicators. Although I've also been told it was done to help protect the frame in accidents as many bikes were written off because the frame was bent by the indicator when the bike went down.

There’s a Z1B on the cover of Sunrise to Z1 with one of those grab rails so they probably originated in 1975 but they really only came in with the A4. To my mind they’re spectacularly ugly.

I’ve heard this thing before about frames bring written off by the indicators but I find it hard to credit the indicators are made out of fairly flimsy material and don’t stick out that much past the shock, if you’re going down that hard I think that would be the least of your worries...

Heres my take on it Ive owned 6 Z1Bs the earliest was a sept 74 all of them have been UK bikes. They all came with frame mounted indicators. Legend has it towards the end of the Z1bs life they ran out of grab rails and fitted the new Z900 items.

ABOVE, 18 years at the time and my first Blue one a sept 74 bike, had to remount the indicators on to rickman rack, junked original exhausts to fit Dunstall pipes and fairing

ABOVE, second one was a very late bike Aug 75 in red, indicators on frame, notice this came with a Z900 seat fitted! think they were fishing around in the parts bin by then as the New model Z900 was the one to get. hope this helps
Now where did I leave my Keys!
