Registering my Z

Hi,

I need some advice from anyone who has brought a bike back from abroad (Germany).

Here is the deal, my Uncle kindly gave me his 1983 Z1000 as a present in 2018 but i didn't pick it up from Germany until 2019. I just want to make it clear, this bike was a present and not a penny paid. The bike is a non-runner but i'm getting it back on the road during Furlough. I've just had a look on getting it registered and have noticed on the Gov.org website that i should of registered 2 weeks after import to HMRC for for duty reasons. (oops!) Question, why do I need to notify HMRC?

I then noticed it says 'purchased'? on the v55/5 but it was a present.

I would appreciate any help on this, thank you.

Dan

been a few years since i've done this but even if you paid for it if the bike was 'duty paid' in EU (which i guess it was) then no tax should be liable.

From the USA or outside EU certainly.

The "purchased" date I would assume would be the date you took ownership, (regardless of whether money changed hands or not).

Because it's come from within the EU, no tax is liable as Chrisu says.
