Zpower carb to head rubbers. (650)

#1 PostAuthor: warren3200gt » Thu Jun 25, 2020 4:47 pm

Over winter I noticed one of my 650s had a few suspect looking carb head mount boots. Ordered up some new from Zpower, noticed they felt very soft but fitted them and looked forward to summer. Took that bike out for the first time today and noticed a strange noise but it ran perfectly. So back home to investigate and at low revs it sounded like a family of mice being murdered. Weird high pitched squeek on every stroke from rh side. Took no 4 plug out started the bike and squeek gone. Plug back in and squeek is back. Sounds like its comihg from no 4 inlet cam area. So thinking it cant be cam as it would still be there with or without the plug in start poking around the carbs. With the bike running it squeeks, tilt the carbs up and back towards head and the squeek disappears!
Taken the carbs off checked all mount bolts to head are tight, they are, carbs back on tilting them back whilst doing up the clips nice and tight but it still squeeks unless I tilt the carbs back by hand.
Interim fix cable tied the cable mounts round a cam cap bolt so they are tilted back permanently but not a long term solution?

Ideas guys ?

Could it be the inlet mount is allowing a small amount of air in causing the squeak, try the old wd40 trick to see if it's that.

Its definately a bad seal with air passing David, but because they are so soft the weight of the carbs pulling down seems to be enough to break the seal between rubber and head. Other than hoping a new set would be better heath robinson may have to get involved.

Mystery solved. Im embarressed to say that I didn't notice it when I fitted them but no4 carb rubber doesnt have the metal plate moulded inside it so I would never have got a satisfactory seal. Fortunately the rh original ones were not one of the ones I thought suspect so just swopped no 4 back.
Manufacturing fault which z power would never have spotted.
