Further to my previous post of today, herewith the rear wheel lacing. Any advice regarding errors in the pattern would be much appreciated. I started with the hub near enough centred in the rim, with the stampings side down, the valve hole at 12 o'clock and the hub shoe side up. I then inserted the first top inner into the hole on the right side of the valve and rotated the hub clockwise until it was again centred. Then I did the 2-4 process on the inners, and turned over and did the inners on the other side. I'm hoping that's the correct procedure. Interestingly, and something I hadn't noticed before is that the rear rim has two valve holes! Can anyone confirm whether this is normal?

there are three "valve holes" in the rear rim. One is indeed a valve hole, the other two holes are ment to bolt the tire grippers in.
The two tire gripper holes are 180° opposite to eachother, the valve hole is near one of the tire gripper holes.
If it's a genuine "TAKASAGO" rim there should be 3 holes The writing on the rim should be Takasago 303 2,15x18 and the year and month of production. 3 A means: year of production: 1973 , the month of production: Januari .

Thanks for the advice Philippe. These are the original fitted rims (rear is dated November 1974 , see pic). I bought the bike on 1st May 1975. I can see the two gripper holes as they have a slight flattening which I'm guessing is the bed for a washer. I can't find a schematic anywhere showing the grippers so cannot work out what washers (plain/spring) go on the inside or outside of the rim. Do you have any idea of the set-up for this?

Central Wheels in Birmingham have said they do not balance wheels with "rim locks/security bolts" fitted, although they are quite happy to fit my "rim locks". I assume they are referring to the rear tyre grippers although I have queried this with them. Does anyone know of a reason why this is the case?

the correct way to install a tyre gripper is first the protective rubber band, the tire gripper through the rubber band and the rim, a spring washer and a 8mm nut. You can always put a plain washer between the rim and the spring washer in order to protect the chrome but that's up to you.

Many thanks Philippe. You sir are a diamond. I'm guessing that what you mean by "protective rubber band" is what I call a rim tape.
