Minor details z650

Nearing completion on the rebuild of the z650. The red paintwork is growing on me now that I have polished and waxed it and fitted the nice shiny bits. Pics coming soon....In the meanwhile, a couple of questions if I may...

First pic shows the clock surround. As can be seen, it is pock-marked with surface corrosion. Incidentally, it is the original enamel? paintwork but I have clearly replaced the pods with chrome. The question is whether to leave as is and keep the original paintwork, or rub it down and respray. If the latter, and I am tending towards that as it looks somewhat incongruous against the rest of the now very nice looking bike, then respray with what? I have black enamel - which I think will be close, or gloss black.

Second pic shows the outlet fuel pipe connection from the petcock to the carbs. You can see the groove. Should there be an o-ring here? If so, it may still be in the petcock body I guess.......

Originally the clocks where satin black. Simonez tough paint satin black is the go to for original match.
Post a pic ot your fuel tap Oggers. Dont think you have the gravity type off a b1 like below. The feed pipe doesn't come out of these.
Or if thats a pic of the other carb end it should be a T piece.

Correct...I don't have a (direct) gravity feed. It's vacuum controlled. Red pipe connects to carbs and provides vacuum on a diaphragm within the petcock thus allowing fuel though the feed pipe - the one with the groove as per previous pic. No vacuum, no fuel, unless the valve is switched to prime at 3 o clock. Safety thing I imagine. The feed connection was pulled as per the pic. No o-ring in the petcock body, and also pretty certain it did not leak when I ran it a while back despite no o-ring. However, the groove is surely indicative of an o-ring? - for which incidentally I have spent the last hour rooting through all my bits searching for one and failed miserably. Could have started it otherwise....

That explains it. I really dislike those taps, I hear about too many issues with them. If it were my bike I would seal off the vacuum pipe at both ends, use prime as on and on as off. I have the habit of turning off the tap everytime I get off the bike.
Short term fix for no o ring is plumbers ptfe sealing tape.
Ps, your tap needs cleaning :D

Hi Warren

Agreed. I am not a fan either. it seems to work though...for now. I too turn the tap off when finished, but clearly not possible here. I don't like the fact the diaphragm could fail if tap is ON or at RES and allow fuel through when the bike is not running. Yes I have PTFE tape, but the local - and very useful garage shop - should have a suitable o-ring. Yes it's rusty, and yes I will clean it up. Cannot have it spoiling things!

Incidentally the clock surround is deffo gloss of some sort - looks enamel to me and original. I actually prefer it to satin against the chrome pods. Leaning towards respraying it...

Pics to follow. Looks far better with the Euro bars, and everything polished up.

My clock surround as per pic - surely not satin! I also had assurrance from the PO that nothing had been touched from the factory. Herewith also a pic of an ad for my clocks. Looks to have more sheen to it than satin perhaps? :rock

My B1 650 I bought new in 77. I have owned it since then. I know what has and hasn't been done to it and the clocks haven't been touched. They are definitely satin not gloss.

From what I can remember from my Z650 B1 model, the speedo and tachometer bodies were satin black. This also applies to the pods underneath each gauge.
