Zephyr 4 into 4s

#1 PostAuthor: DaveZ1 » Sat Sep 26, 2020 8:39 pm

Hi all haven’t been on the forum for a while and after a bit of a gap in my Z1 restoration projects I’ve decided to do something a little different. I managed to acquire a rare spoked wheel model 98 Zephyr with low miles and fancy doing a Z1 theme makeover/ restore. There seems to be lots of Z1 style replacement parts to fit Zephyr’s including paint sets chrome front and rear mudguards tail lights and 4 into 4 Z1 style exhausts. Most of these goodies are available via Webike japan but I’m having a real problem getting the exhausts. Webike are out of stock and can’t say if they will have any in future. Dave at Cybike is trying for me but isn’t promising anything for the near future. So I was just wondering if anyone has ever tried fitting actual Z1 4 into 4s on to a Zephyr or if it’s viable even with some modification. I’m getting hold of a used rusty set of Z1 exhausts to offer up to the bike in the next few weeks but if anyone knows definitively that I’m barking up the wrong tree and need the the correct Doremi Zephyr replica items then I’d appreciate the info or if by some miracle anyone knows where I can get my hands on a set I’d be blown away.
Cheers Dave
Ps I wouldn’t mind posting a project progress story if you think a Z1 tribute Zephyr is relevant enough for this forum. :D

Good luck with the quest !

Zephyr 1100 would make a great project plenty of inspiration from the Japanese who seem to like their modified Zephyrs- but...

This is the starting point. It actually looks better than it is in real life but think this photo was from the seller a couple of years ago.
Anyway the target is something along these lines:

Add the spoked wheels and 4 into 4 exhausts.........
Think you would have to do a double take just to be sure!!!

I think you may run into problems with the exhausts unless you buy the correct ones, I had a early 750 zephyr that I turned into a jaffa, kept the alloy wheels an put a Harris style exhaust on it.

I did the 750 (great bike) and did look at the original Z1 4x4's which I believe are not that hard to adapt. In the end I ruled them out on cost and the original pipes were so good.

With Alloys & spokes....

Given the amount of Jaffa 'Tribute' models there are I'd go for something a little different and paint it in A4 colours.
Turn up at your local bike meet these days and it's a sea of Jaffa look-e-like bikes both new & old.

Yes Keith I’ve been on a website that you can check how many of a particular model are registered either taxed or sorn’ed and the spoked Zephyr 1100 is showing only 40 ish in the U.K. so I was lucky to find this one which hasn’t been used since 2015 quite local to me too :D I’ve recently joined the Facebook Zephyr owners and it seems like it will be a useful information resource.
I thought seeing as it’s Z1 pipes fitting a Zephyr info I’m after, this might be the place to ask as we have a lot more members and a massive depth of knowledge and experience from a lot of years of tinkering and fettling.
It would be great if I knew that Z1 replica pipes could be adapted to fit my Zephyr without too much trouble. I’ve read on here that exhaust port spacing is slightly different but seeing as each cylinder has its own pipe without rigid links between all four this may not be so much of a problem. Plus I’ve compared photos in detail of Zephyr and Z1 4 into 4s and they look very similar.
A mate has an old Z1 set that I can try in a couple of weeks so I guess I’ll see then. Cheers for the info so far chaps I’ll keep you posted of my progress.

Is that photo "real" ??

The pipes look like Z1 items.
Even down to the cut out for the centre stand.

They do look the same.

They are in black, not chrome.
