Z1 reg/rec earth points

Just finishing off wiring my Z1-B up, and have two earth leads left to connect. I was intending to connect the rectifier earth directly to the battery (-) terminal and the regulator to the main engine earth point just above the KS shaft. Is this OK or are there better earth points?

I've attached pics of both leads just to make sure I'm actually talking about the correct leads :D

I am also using the original 45-yr old reg & rec in the, possibly wildly optimistic, hope that they are OK and will continue to be so for the near future. BTW the LH connector is the wrong colour (s/be brown) as it is a pattern main harness. All the other kit on the panel, including the panel and battery box, is original, so fingers crossed :gom

I have just fitted the reg/rectifier sold by Zpower to my Z1B, i think it is one of the best things i have done to her, I would honestly consider doing this for ease of mind. It cost £95 less owners club discount.

The above are very valid points. I would suspect your reg is shot anyway. Maybe the rec is OK but it all depends on what degree of originality you want. If you are not fussed, I'd get rid of those old items. NOS originality now comes at an expensive premium

Do regs degrade with age? The bike had only done about 22,000 miles when it came off the road (literally!) in 1977.

Yes! They are electronic devices filled with chemicals that change or degrade over time.

when the regulator fails it boils the battery and the acid runs down over the pipes ........ i was lucky I spotted the splashes before it marked the chrome ...... others have not been so fortunate
