Hi All,
I have manage to steal a few hours here and there and started stripping the 1000r.
I am happy enough so far that there have been no major surprises and all bolts have come undone( with a bit of persuasion). I know this is the easy bit though. I am looking forward to selling off all the spare parts I'll have when I assemble it all later .
Anyway, The wheels were painted white well before I ever got it and I want to make sure they are worth the effort before I invest in them. I have no pictures at present but I will put them up when I get chance. The rear wheel had three of the wafer head allen bolts that hold on the disc drilled out and tapped to take a larger modified bolt, if this wasn't bad enough, on of these was held in with silicone!! I'm fairly happy to tidy up the threads and fit a bit of Aluminium rod drilled and tapped to suit the original bolts. Is there any other way of tackling this? The second issue is a small chip gone off the front wheel right were it meets the tyre. its about 8x4mm. Can I get this built in Aluminium weld( I'm guessing the wheel is a magnesium alloy) and would the heat effect the strength of the wheel?
Finally, I've rang around and while I can get the wheels powder coated pretty easily I haven't come across anyone who could anodize the wheels again.I am presuming when stripped the original colour will be gold, any suggestions how, or where I get this sorted?

I’m not sure there is much magnesium in the R2 wheels any more than any other alloy wheel a picture of the chunk out might help if it’s not too bad a good alloy welder should be able to tackle it

I don't think the original wheels were anodised, I think they were painted then diamond cut, this is as close as I could get to Z1100R wheels gold...

Hi again lads,
Some pictures of the wheels. I have a broken circlip to remove and a botched retap to repair, then when the piggy bang allows I'll be sending the rims to Mark.
In the mean time any suggestions for stripping paint?
Mechanical or chemical?
I'm sure Mark can strip them, but I am itching to see what they are like underneath.

That chunk looks fixable. Blasting is probably easiest way to get paint off, soda if you want to get the edges polished.

I fear that the front wheel hit something and isn't straight anymore. Or did the chunk broke off when changing the tyre?
Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to replace it with another wheel? They're not that hard to find after all. Or am I wrong?
You want to repaint them and the paint has to come off. Removing white paint or black paint is the same work...

I too wouldnt want that fixed. It needs to be x rayed to ensure there are no unseen cracks from the impact. Much cheaper and simpler to source another un damaged one to re finish.

+1 ...... that tyre damage to to left of the wheel damage suggests that the tyre has been "pinched" with the tyre then turning on the rim. That would be quite some force.

I have a front and rear wheel which may be the same, if you would like some pictures I could put them up later?

Surplus to my requirements so very cheap.
