Airbox options

Hi Guyz,
In an attempt to make some progress on my Unitrak I bought a set of 34mm CVs off evelbay. Now I realise the carbs are longer than the throttle bodies. As a result, I can’t get the carbs in with the standard airbox.

What carb airbox will fit? Would an 1100R or 1000J box fit a Unitrak?

Thanks
Paul

Z1100R1, Z1000R and J airboxes are the same as each other apart from different finishes to the side flashes. I cant tell you if one will fit an 1100 Unitrak frame but the part in front of the frame tubes is fairly slender on the J airbox. I think the GPz 1100B airbox looks fatter just there. You can move the J etc airbox back a bit on the standard J etc bike, for fitting purposes and i have moved mine up and foward by making new versions of the sliding side brackets. Cant help more i'm afraid but a picture of the standard airbox in the Uni 1100 frame might help to get an idea of whats involved. There is a thread on here about making new, shorter airbox to carb rubbers for a situation similar to this.

Here’s a couple of pic’s of the airbox in the Unitrak frame. There’s no free space in any direction.

If you look at the ID pic’s in the workshop manual, compare where the crankcase breather lines up, you can see there’s 20-30mm difference between the injected and carb’ed models.

Try a gpz 750 unitrac airbox. Fits a treat in the gpz1100b2. A z1000j airbox won't fit in a b2 - too long. If the 750 one fits (it probably will) cut the snorkel bit off of the lid and put a k^&n filter in there.

Thanks AL and Olly. I hadn’t considered a 750 airbox. It opens up my options a little. I’ll ask in the wanted section if anyone has one.

I have an airbox on my J, would it help you if i took a few measurements of the important bits?

Thanks AL, that would be great. From Olly’s comment it might be the length that’s critical but as many dimensions as possible. The more the merrier.

Thanks for that. I’ve modelled my Unitrak box in 3d cad. Then done the same with your dimensions.

I’m thinking the J box has the silencer in the lid whereas the Unitrak has the filter moved forward and the silencer on the end. This makes space for the fuel pump.

Does your airbox have any identifying characters under the carb rubbers? I found this on ebay.

Yes mine has the same numbers as that one you found. I cant see it, but found this one which should be the same thing with a few details exceptions.

The J Etc. airbox has the lid on top at the back and a snorkel as per the above link. I see they have a 30 day refund policy. Perhaps soak up the postage and return postage and try it and see. Nothing like trying it in the hole for size :)
Can you superimpose one airbox on the other to see where they may not be the same?
I dont use the lid or snorkel on mine but have made a small bracket to replace the lid since it holds the filter in place. I have taken a couple of pictures to that effect which i can post in a bit.
