hi all i have ran my z1 for first time runs pretty good but noticed its charging high 13.8 at idle seems ok rev to 4000rpm 16.8v to me to high.everything seems to check out ok.rigged up to a car battery at mo never had any problems before on other bikes.did a bit of research found somewhere that regulator needs 12v feed or will compensate on charging.leads me onto other problem its only getting 10.8-11v with ignition on.so checked it and found when i unplug coils get battery voltage on brown wires plug the coils back in get 11v.is this normal dont wanna do wired george set up yet.is it something else like connections etc when the coils (cos they draw current) are plugged in on the yellow wires or do you reckon faulty regulator.is the full 12v feed to reg nonsense.any help is appreciated.
cheers

First thing to do is get shot of car battery, test the voltage from alternator, then regulator rectifier, the voltage drop at the coils will probably be due to dirty connections on aged harness.

more than likely the regulator fit a combined regulator/ rectifier & no more charging issues

eBay item number:154230269393

Dont get bogged down with the voltage at the coils, concentrate on 16.8v charge cos its way too much which suggests ,( and I ssume its an original unit ) it's shot and will only get worse.
You would not believe how bad a boiled battery smells, or how much damage it will do if it bursts. listen to Paul :up

ok cheers prob is regulator want to try and keep original set up if poss on this to be honest my z1a has similar voltage drop at coils but charges ok. just wondering why it could be connections on harness if checks out ok with full battery voltage with only the coils disconnected.

1-2 volt drop is normal depends on what coils you have fitting. the combined regulator rectifier doesn't involve modifying anything on the wiring as everything is there in the electrical panel to wire it up as if it came from the factory & if you decide to replace it with the very expensive inferior original parts it easy to change it back

does the same job but a bit cheaper. the z power one fits better as it already has the correct block connector fitted but you can remove the one from your old unit without too much work

I recommend electrex world reg/rectifier, i have had others and been dissatisfied with them.
