Timing mark on exhaust cam?

#1 PostAuthor: steve452 » Sun Jan 17, 2021 5:22 pm

About to re-install the cams (again!) and just for my own peace of mind can one of you please confirm that I am using the correct mark on the exhaust cam. I know I did it once last year but I have trouble remembering my own name nowadays (I think it's Dave, Rodney). Problem is that my SM is revision 3 dated July '74 and my Z1-B is a Jan '75 build. The SM shows a line marked on the exhaust cam on the #2 cylinder side (see pic) but my exhaust cam has no such mark. However, it does have marks on the #3 cylinder side next to the tacho worm drive which are about in line with the notch on the RHS end of the cam, and henceforth are about 180 degrees from the #4 cylinder lobe. However I have 2 marks. One appears to be like a small arrow or a backwards "Y" and the other is a scored line. The both seem to be pointing to the same place on the sprocket so I reckon I just need to line up the centre of the chain link rivet sitting in the sprocket notch? I'm guessing the arrow is the correct mark but just need someone to confirm it.

Also, I'm using Permatex Ultra Slick assembly lube on the cam shells and journals and am assuming it's better to use too much than too little as the excess would just squeeze out when the caps are torqued down. Would this be correct?

Many thanks in advance.

Steve (or Dave).

Exhaust timing mark on the sprocket by the single bolt is a >, count back the pins to the 28? Marked on the inlet cam from memory.
