The SM (Revision 3 Jly 74) specifies the torque for the cam cap bolts as 13.5 ft/lb (1.5 kg/m) which I am guessing is a conversion error as 1.5 kg/m is actually about 10.85 ft/lbs. I have just reinstalled the cams and torqued the cap bolts up to 1.5 kg/m (ie the lower of the two settings).

Before I replace the cam cover can someone please confirm whether this is correct, or should I go for the higher setting of 13.5 ft/lb (which is about 1.87 kg/m).

Cam cap bolts don't need more than 6-7ft lbs the factory manual is wrong and 13.5 will kill them

That's near enough (-0.05 ft/lb) to 105 in/lb which is what the manual recommends for the cam cover bolts! Should the cam cap bolts be the same?

Mine are already torqued to 10.8 ft/lb. Here's hoping they stay there!

+1 correct torque is 8.7 ft/lb.

My factory manual gives 7.9 to 9.4 foot pounds, i always go to the lower reading.

Would it be a good idea to loosen off the bolts and then re-torque to the correct figure?

Basically 10 nm in new money, which is DIN standard for an 8.8 grade bolt.

Wouldn't hurt, the head may distort very slightly if the bolts are too tight, certainly seen this with the main head studs. Also if I'd damaged a thread or stretched a bolt I'd rather find it this time of year than in summer when I want to ride it, though usually if you've damaged something it'll be obvious at the time as it'll just keep on turning.

Cheers Olly. They did seem to tighten up fine without any of the "slippage" you normally get when a bolt threads. However I think I'll err on the side of caution and re-torque them.

Cam cap bolts now torqued up to 8.7ish ft/lb, chain tensioner installed and adjusted and engine rotated by hand a couple of times and the cam timing is still the same! Result!

Quick question and possibly bollocks but I'm sure I read in a past post here that there is a correct orientation for the cam cover. It looks symmetrical to me apart from the "Made in Japan" stamping inside the central bit covering the tunnel, but I stand to be corrected if I'm wrong.

Some covers have an arrow inside some don't, the one on my thou fits both ways.
