Hi,
pretty sure the light has to be operated by front and rear switches if bike was first registered after 1986. Before that it only needs to be one switch.
I may stand to be corrected :??

If it's fitted then yes it needs to work. As a bike has 2 switches they both need to work. Check electrical connections on the front switch. There's not much on the actual switches that can go wrong.

Can you not just wave your arm up and down in an Augustus Windsock Stylie to indicate to other road users you are about to slow down?...

Brake light switch is under front master cylinder and held by a small screw with 2 wires attached, uncouple and place a jumper wire or split in and see if light works on rear with ignition on,if so switch needs replacing. Common switch couple of quid on eBay To check switch use meter on ohms to check on two terminals when little peg is out for circuit. To fit it is easier to unbolt master cylinder and turn upside down with a cloth underneath to catch any spills, take out screw and remove, when replacing either pull lever or remove lever and replace this stops switch being damaged and Arcaro to fit. Hope this helps!
