Finally decided to succumb.

So yet another crappy chinese condensor has gone south. I have fireworks at the points for 2&3. Swopped the condensors over and I have fireworks on 1&2.
As an ardent original kinda guy im loathe to go elrctronic but getting feed up chasing ignition issues making the bike un ridable.

So Im in need of a dyna s for a 650. Couple of questions.
1, do I really need coils. It currently has originals on it which work fine when the points do.
2, is there a source i should be considering other than zpower or cybike? Possibly better priced?
Or,
3, is there a source of good non chinese condensors now?
Tia.

Stock coils are fine Warren, Suzuki performance spares or grumpy 1260 for dyna ignition.

As above , Nick or Grumpy for best prices.
Stock coils will be ok but with matching Dyna's it will kick out a much fatter spark for better starting and performance.

Grumpy 1260, best price at the moment £164.98 posted, Z power £175 + postage, with discount will probably be a touch cheaper, mind you if i were to replace mine i would go for a Boyer as it does away with the advance unit as well.

I'd advocate avoiding dyna coils at all costs, based on personal experience THEY'RE SHITE and offer no benefits over std n are just a moulten plasma ball ache...

I have had a Dyna S on my Elr for a few years and despite doing the wired George mod I found the spark weak (although I didn't know it was weak tbh). I had to buy replacement coils every so often and the bike ran poorly. Buzzard was doing some other bits and pieces on the bike and is ultra helpful and so ordered me Dyna coils with Taylor leads.
I fitted them roughly a month ago (with spacer's on the mounting lugs to prevent cracking) tweaked the timing and what a difference. The spark is huge, if you forget and pull the lead off the plug with the bike running it's like a scene from ghostbusters!

I can't say if Dyna coils will help in isolation, however I now know that the spark with my standard coils was 100% crap.

Cheers.

Stu

There's nothing wrong with Dyna coils as long as you make sure the spacers are long enough so the body clears the frame bracket and the core isn't flexed when bolted down which leads to the insulation eventually cracking, moisture ingress and failure .
I've got them correctly mounted on all my Zeds and never had an issue ever.
Over 20 years and still going on my everyday runner Z1R.
Compared to stock coils average 22k volts to the dyna 35k volts output the power difference is noticeable especially at higher rpms when the spark doesn't get suppressed and stays consistent for a fuller burn.

I ran Dyna S with standard coils for a couple of years and then fitted dyna coils. As people have already said, there is a very noticeable difference in how it runs with Dyna's

It is very easy to incorrectly space the Dyna coils from the frame as you can barely see the coil body making contact - I'd wager is responsible for most of the reports of Dyna's cracking. I bought a length of thick walled nylon tube and cut to length which removes the need to insulate a steel spacer tube to prevent arcing.

+1. Hard plastic diesel fuel line worked for me,.... the LT +ve can arc on the spacer tube used to pack the coils away from the frame, so replace the standard metal spacer tubes with slightly longer plastic tubes. not the smartest aspect of the design but they are very good otherwise.
