Probably been asked loads of times but not wanting to miss out and to make sure i have this correct.
I am looking to register the z900 as historical i already have a v5 as it is registered, in order to make it on to the historical register i need to
1 pay for road tax
2 apply for historical tax exception
3 get the post office to forward the documents.

so in order to tax the bike i need an MOT (not a problem as i would like it looked over) then i can follow 1 to 3 above

I'm no expert but I'd say all you need to do is go to the PO and get them to change status to Historic by getting them to send V5 to DVLA, I don't see why you need an MOT or why you should have to pay road tax. No doubt someone on here will have better information but a chat with the PO staff will probably clarify all.

As far as I remember you have to go to a Post Office that does vehicle tax, initially, in person, (you might be able to do it by sending all the stuff to the DVLA, but I'm not sure about that).

Take your log book, (V5C), your vehicle tax reminder, (V11 if you have it), a valid MOT for the date when the tax starts, (unless the vehicle is exempt in which case evidence of this in the form of a V112) & valid insurance certificate for the vehicle.

Basically you fill in the V112 to declare your vehicle is exempt road tax, pay for your tax, but in your case it will be free & the Post Office person will take your V5C, (I think) & you get a new one sent to you with the taxation class changed to "HISTORIC".
After that you can tax your vehicle as before, but obviously you do not have to pay anything, it's just a paperwork exercise.

You were, but this has now changed, then able to display a black & silver number plate if you so desired. However, like I say after a certain date that loop-hole has been closed.
The DVLA never intended to allow people to change their yellow/black number plates to black/silver, so they closed that loop-hole after a certain date, but allowed vehicle owners that had changed their plates to leave them on.
Many people think A4's should keep with the yellow/black plates because that is how they were supplied originally. It depends upon your personal preference, I like the black/silver option so I kept it on. There's unlikely to be any "real" original bikes out there any more so the argument is very subjective. Horses for courses.

all the above except the insurance and if you do not have a V11 get a V10 from the PO and fill it in ......if it's insured then they will know, in addition fill in the change of taxation class on the V5c to Historic vehicle.....sign it .... the postmaster will do the deed hand back the back half of the V5c and send it off, I have now done this 6 times and each has gone without a hitch

Insurance needed. Change tax class on V5 to historical. Take to Post Office.
