I know and ive even changed the bulb just in case, the break lights perfect. it flashes from the moment you turn the key....is that correct or should it just come on when the break is applied

It should only flash if it "thinks" the bulb has blown.
The idiot light should only illuminate when the brake is applied.
The fact that its flashing means the little box of tricks is working. If it were not it wouldnt flash even if the bulb were blown.
What happens to the idiot light if you remove the tail bulb and turn ignition on? It should flash. It measures the resistance in the circuit. If the resistance is too high i.e. blown bulb or not fitted, it triggers.
You can try another unit, if you can find or borrow one but I suspect it'll behave the same. Or you can disconnect and do away with the safety feature.

Davidz1r had some nos units forsale a year or two back but i suspect he sold them all pretty quickly. Even unknown to be good units on ebay ask stupid money for what they are.

Baz, a dirty connection or rusty bulb holder increases the resistance, maybe over the units threshold.

Good, shows unit is working. Now try reverse, bulb in, unit disconnect. If it still flashes then, god know whats happening.

It should be attached by a rubber sleeve, under the fuel tank close to the two ignition coils, left hand side. I think you should be able to see it if you look under the tank, between the top of the motor.
I think there's a short loom to it with a small white 3-pin plug, although it might be a 2-pin plug.

Or if its a 650 it'll be on the backside of the electrics plate under the left side panel.
