Z900 a4 frame with nova imported

Hi I’m hoping that one of you knowledgeable people can give me some advice. I’m looking to replace my Z900 frame with an imported frame from America it has number of 087489 year 1976 one of 1788 manufactured in Japan for that year ?. Is this correct and can I get a log book sorted through the dvla? It has nova cert. looking to swop over parts and another z900 engine I have spare as my frame is cat D insurance against it. I’ve been offers it for £750 is this a fare price ? . Not looking to profit from this I’ve had the bike 15 year and plan to Keep it.

Any help or advise would greatly appreciated

From my ltd experience having just registered a Euro import you would need either the original title from the country of import or a dating cert from a authorised owners type club to get a log book. The NOVA only confirms duty and taxes have been paid and is not an entitlement

Also, DVLA will occasionally ask to view an import to check the stated information on the application is correct and they like to see complete running vehicles, not parts.

As said though, I'm no expert

Best to think about it this way...Although you and us know what you are trying to do, as far as HMRC and DVLA are concerned they deal in complete vehicles only.

Also, remember DVLA and HMRC are seperate organisations, doing different things with different agendas and requirements.

HMRC want to make sure you tell them of a vehicle that has come into the country and pay the duty and VAT on it, they don't care what you do with it after that.

DVLA only care that HMRC are satisfied, by the NOVA system, then they, as far as they are concerned are simply changing ownership to you from whoever owned it before. That's why they destroy original ownership information.

So, you need to declare a NOVA for a complete motorcycle with the frame number of the frame you are looking at buying, you can also put your engine number on it, there is no engine number cross-check.

Once you have the NOVA, there is no time limit to register it (yes, I phoned them to confirm this, so don't listen to Facetwat experts or should it be face book twats, saying there is a time limit, the only time limit is in declaring the import to HMRC), so you lose nothing by building the bike before registering it. This avoids the possibility of getting an inspection when you don't have a complete bike, although if that happens they only tell you to come back later.

NOVA is now done by completing a form, which is submitted to HMRC, they tell you of the VAT and duty due and when you pay it they issue the NOVA, I believe, because that is how it is for European imports.

To register, you will need a dating certificate and all clubs require a picture of the bike and the frame and engine numbers. You could photograph your existing bike, the new frame number and your engine number and submit that, but that would be dishonest and I wouldn't recommend it.

If you try to go down the route of importing the frame, without declaring it as a vehicle you will get into the built-up vehicle system. I strongly suggest you don't go there.

Yes, you won't get a dating letter from a club, so you would end up with a Q plate and probably need to submit for an SVA for a built up vehicle..

Best to register it with the original engine and make the change after.

Thanks for the reply, how anal does it get if I fitted a later J motor in an earlier A1 bike ? Also does it matter what running chassis you have , say Bandit front and back etc ??

Theoretically, it matters a lot as they use the term "substantially modified". But to register it on an age related plate you need to prove the age. No club is going to put it's name to something that isn't demonstrably original and of the age claimed.

Officially that is correct, although DVLA do throw a wobbly sometimes.
