Z900 A4 engine start up out of the bike
I have Z900 completely in parts except engine and carbs,. It looks to have electronic ignition ? But can’t find the main unit or identify the manufacturer, pictures attached , can any of you more experienced individuals identify the electronic ignition on the engine?.
I’m thinking of trying to start the engine of the engine stand and see how it sounds etc . It is not seized turns over freely and the carbs are not leaking petrol. I am not looking to completely restore just want to have the pleasure of riding it , obviously all
Work required to get it road worthy will be carried out.
Would it be a good idea to revert back to the points set up to try out the engine , remote fuel supply and battery hook up.
Thanks for any replies in advance .

Thanks for the quick response and replies , it’s really appreciated. Just looked in a box of spares I have accumulated over the years and found a complete unit that matches your descriptions and has the lead and hook to the main unit .
Next question is can I hook it up to battery as previously stated with remote fuel supply to potentially get it running ?. Sorry for my lack of knowledge on this but this is why I have put it out there for you guys with the experience and know how.
Thanks

This is a picture of the unit I have that may be a match for what is on the engine ?.
Re: Z900 A4 engine start up out of the bike
Yes, that's the rest of it. I happen to be working on an rd250 that has one fitted at the moment.
If its any help, the blue flying lead is the earth, the three leads on the plug are power in to the unit and power out to each coil. The timing on one of the optical triggers looks to be way out so you'll need to retime it by the looks of it.
Apparently, as it's an optical trigger, bright sunlight and strobe lights can make it go scatty.

Thanks for that information, the one on the bottom picture is a separate one I have, the top 2 pictures show the the other unit minus the box on the engine i’m sure I’ll find the box amongst things.
Re: Z900 A4 engine start up out of the bike
Hi can anyone identify the component attached to one of the coils circled in blue. Does not seem to show on the information I have downloaded for the electronic ignition?. Thanks in advance of any replies.
Re: Z900 A4 engine start up out of the bike
That is the brake light failure relay for the little red light in the rev counter and it is mounted on the frame with the coils.

Re: Z900 A4 engine start up out of the bike
Quick update
Managed to hook up the wiring loom too all the ancillary electrical components, issues with earthing, but sorted. Swopped out the black box with an other spare as suspect faulty , made bracket to mount the coils I top of the rocker box cover , new ignition and key “ it lives , I’ve got a spark”. Will top up the oil attach the carbs which I’ve checked for leaks, all ok, obviously all will need thorough sorting. The engine turns over freely of the starter motor and kick start.
What are the thoughts of quick start up, no exhaust headers or silencer ?.Just want to see if it it will run ?. It will run lean ?. Would you advise exhaust fitment
You experienced individuals will horrified by the pictures lol but it’s temporary and will be sorted before any attempt at starting.
All comments and advice is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Brief run won't hurt it at all.

I'd wan't to rig up a makeshift oil light, just to make sure you've got pressure before starting.
