a4 front master cylinder

#1 PostAuthor: Peteypops23 » Sun Jan 16, 2022 4:59 pm

Evening folks,
I'm currently rebuilding the front brake system on the 1976 a4 and I'm having a wee meltdown trying to disassemble the master cylinder.
I've removed the dust seal and the circlip

. However I can't see how to remove the piston and spring. There looks to be a retaining ring around the piston but not sure?
Any hints, tips or photos greatly received.
Thanks again guys!
Pete

there is a washer under the cir clip but it shouldn't prevent the piston from being removed. insert a screwdriver in the hole where the banjo bolt fits & tap it out gently

Hi Pete

it sure looks like it could use some cleaning and replacement, you did a good job and the advice of Z1B man was correct, I do it always like that when the piston doesn't come out by the force of the internal spring.

Hi Philippe,
yup, this is why I think this Owners Club is the best.
There's always people who will know what to do.
I will be putting the master cylinder in the ultrasonic and ordering the piston kit etc from z power today.
It keeps me out of trouble I suppose!
