Ic igniter bypass
Built a z1000j bottom end/gpz1100 top end motor on the bench. Wired it up to run on the bench with stock pick ups/ic ignitor/coils obviously as dead loss electrical power.
All four plugs are sparking but pathetically, not enough to give e confidence they will do so under compression.
All the individual components test as good individually.
So questions are can I eradicate the ic ignitor out the circuit but still use the oem picks up? Can I swop coils for 650 coils ( I have loads laying around) bypassing the ignitor? What I'm trying to do is isolate each components to see where my issue lies.
Whilst writing this it's occurred to me as it's affecting all 4 plugs it got to be the ignitor or bad earth. Having said that I would prefer to run without the ignitor if poss. Engine has an atu unit so what does the ic ignitor actually do?

That would be the sensible thing to do but not interested on this build. I'm trying to build it from what came with it and 40+ years of sparts I've got laying around here unused.

you cannot bypass the igniter only replace it for another one

What does it do? Just another bit of electrickery to go wrong. The old style ignition worked perfectly well.

Re: Ic igniter bypass
it has capacitors internally that are charged with a high voltage 400-600 volts & this charge is released to the ignition coil when the pulsing coil reaches the firing point

Re: Ic igniter bypass
So if the J pickups just trigger the coil discharge the same as Dyna's do could I not just swop out the J coils and use 650 coils powered through a wired George relay mod? Omitting the IC completely?

Re: Ic igniter bypass
no you cannot omit the cdi as i have said this an essential part of the ignition system & is similar to a human brain without it it wont function the wired george mod is not a substitute to replace the cdi

Re: Ic igniter bypass
Ow, why is it never straight forward
Can you explain to a electrickery luddite why not. If the pickups are just triggers, and the atu is to advance ign, if I use 650 coils and wired George to power them whats the difference to a normal 650/900/1000 set up?

Re: Ic igniter bypass
there's no difference some have a points system some have a cdi some have the cdi built into the ignition coil

Re: Ic igniter bypass
So I could use J pickups/650 coils/wired George? Thus omitting the IC?potential weak spark and J coils potential weak spark with the added bonus of using some sparts.

Re: Ic igniter bypass
noooooooooooo you cannot omit the cdi. all the wired george mod does is if you have old brittle wiring to the 12 volt wires to the coils it just improves the voltage to basically what you have in your battery & you are replacing the old wires with new

Re: Ic igniter bypass
What am I missing then. If the J pickups are just triggers, why can't I replicate the old style ignition on a J engine.? (Wiring loom aside). An engine is an engine is an engine.
Only reason mentioned wired George is to eliminate other potential weak spark causes.

Re: Ic igniter bypass
As I said, I'm an electrickery luddite so that all means very little to me as interesting as it is.
Essentially I'm asking if the oem pick ups do the same job that Dyna's do and if I replicate the remainder of the earlier system Why wouldn't it work?
Or are the oem pick ups fundamentally different in some way which would make them non compatible with old style ignition Circuits and if they are what is that difference.
