camshaft repair / replacement question Z1000A1

#1 PostAuthor: 777 EMU » Sun May 22, 2022 1:09 pm

Z1000 a1 : this is all new to me so not sure if cams can be repaired?
There is some scoring on journals and looks like some kind of wear on exhaust lobe, looks like when chrome wears off parts showing zinc underneath.
Any suggestions regarding experts in the northwest area?
Hope this makes sense, any advice really appreciated.

Post as pic of the scoring. "wear" marks are likely heat marks and not a problem but again a pic would help.

Plenty of places in UK such as Phil Joy Engineering in Hertfordshire that specialise in cam repair and regrinding etc.
Pretty sure SEP , Kent Cams or Newman Cams etc could do the job too .

The journals are fine if within tolerances, the cam lobe looks like the hard facing is mullered.
Possibly heat related and infrequent oil changes.
What's the shims like on the affected lobes.
Some aftermarket shims are poor quality and can cause lobe damage.

Looks like they have spent a lot of time with water on them, but if they are stock it would probably be cheaper to pick up second hand ones.

Oh they are Yoshimura Bonneville Poppy cams, fairly rare on the ground these days, the intake are in good condition but the exhaust are as you see.

If it might be of any help, I recall reading recently that Pop's Y Bonneville profile is very close to the later Kawasaki GPz 1100a /unitrack cam profile. I understand you can get conversion sprockets to adapt the late 2 bolt cam to the early 3 bolt pattern and being as its the exhaust cam, you'd lose the mechanical tacho drive so this would mean using an electric tacho.... but it might be a less expensive option ?

exhaust shim , if the lobe hard facing is "mullered" is it something that is recoverable ?

Cams cam be re-faced but the cost may be more than picking up another good used set .
You would need to contact one of the cam shops i mentioned to find out.
All the z900-1000 kickstart motor cams are the same spec with only fractional differences in lift ( nominally 8.7mm) due to manufacturing tolerances so they aren't hard to find.
That shim has been scuffed by the cam lobe and without having it in my hand it's hard to tell if it's ok to re-use.

Stick an ad in the wanted section.
I'd be surprised if you can't pick up a decent set from one of the members.
