z1000 a1 cylinder base o rings and gasket compound

i am replacing the o rings in the cylinder base, can anyone advise should these be fitted by pressing down fully into recess or just left slightly proud of the block.
also recommendation for gasket compound for camshaft end plugs and was going to use around block oilways as per manual
