The starter motor on my 1976 Z900 has always been a little slow as if it's not quite powerful enough to spin the engine quickly enough.
I have removed it and stripped it down to find the brushes are well within the wear limit, and nothing too tight or indeed loose. I'm going to give it a good clean following the manual, apply a little light grease and reassemble.
The thing I did notice however, is that there are only two shims at the brush end where the parts manual say five, and there is a fair bit of end float. I realise that it doesn't actually mean there should be five, just enough to stop it flapping about, but does anyone know what end float I should be aiming for?
Cheers, Richard
