Hi,
Got to the point where I got my Z1000A1 rebuild running, lost of build oil smoke and all sorts, then noticed a positive oil leak from behind the ignition plate. I suspect the crank oil seal. The question is does anyone have a suggestion for strategy to fix it? Seal is new and fitted during rebuild but can I replace it without removing the engine? Could the leak be from anywhere or caused by anything else?
I’ll check all bolts are tight first before resorting to stripping

Never tried it so not sure how effective it would be but have heard they can be pulled out by putting a few self tappers through the seal then easing it out with grips on the self tappers.

Doh, what Rob said above was thinking 650.

There are no oil seals on the actual engine crankcases, at the ign side or anywhere else.
The oil seal is in the ignition housing which is bolted on by 6 screws.
Simply remove the ignition backplate, atd and then the housing to fit a new seal.
If there's oil from behind the housing it can only be the housing gasket .

Was a genuine new seal fitted to the ignition housing?

Thanks guys, not so panicked now. The seal was out of a gasket kit I think, gasket kit was genuine, I did buy a wrong kit as well so hoping I’ll have a spare
Of course, just saying this hoping there might be another way, I have to take the stator cover off the other end of the crank to release the rotor on the electronic ignition….

Why do you need to remove the stator cover ??
It has nothing to do with the ignition side..

To lock the crank off with a spanner on the bolt so I can undo the one holding the ignition rotor on?

There's no need for that .
You use the 17mm nut that's keyed to the crank behind the 12mm bolt that holds the rotor on.
Use a spanner on the nut and a socket on the bolt.

You don't need to remove the the engine cover just use a pick tool to pull out the seal then lubricate the new seal with smear of grease & tap the seal into the cover. i have done it hundreds of times . ps you may have dislodged the tension spring from the seal when you installed the engine cover & Kawasaki don't do a gasket kit they only list individual gaskets & seals

Thank you once again, I had missed the oil seal, fixed in 5 minutes. Undid the stator cover expecting a dose of oil to run out as well but nothing so guess I got it all right that side
