Z1000 R2 chain guard

Good evening all.

I will need a new chain guard for my 1984 Eddie Lawson replica in due course, so I thought I'd pick brains now.

The original black plastic ones, that everyone ditched for the chrome ones are like rocking horse sh1t.

Mine has the chrome one and it has started to split, I think where the chain has been slightly loose in the past and it has kinda cut into it. I may be able to get it repaired, but a replacement would be preferred.

Has anyone recently fitted an after market one to their Elr of J? My Elr still has the piggy back shocks so the cutout is fairly sizeable.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Warren3200gt was a proper gent and sent me photos and a diagram with measurements of his chain guard on, regretfully it won't fit my Elr.

I'm therefore still on the hunt for a chain guard or information where people have sourced aftermarket ones for their project.

I've tried skidmarx - no joy and can't get through to Lpm.

if you have a Z1000R2 the swing arm is about 1 cm longer than the swing arm of a Z1000R1. As a matter of fact the Z1000R2 has the same swing arm as the Gpz1100B2. If that makes a difference for the chain guard? I don't know to be honest.
Those chain guards are indeed very difficult to find and to my knowledge not available (anymore) as a replica.
If you should find a producer of replica Z1000J / R chain guards I'm curious to know it.

Hi Philippe,
Interesting point you made there, I have two spare swingarms and always assumed they fitted my J. I wasn't aware of any slight length variation between models.
I'll compare them to the original over the weekend.

when I restored my Gpz1100B2 I wasn't aware of it, I became aware of it when I restored my Z1000R2. I had ordered a chain kit for the Z1000R and when I tried to put the chain on the sprocket the chain was too short. Only then I started to look at the parts numbers of the R1 and R2 and discovered that there was a difference in numbers between the swing arms of the bikes. It turned out that the swingarm of the R1 had the same parts number as a Z1000J and that the swing arm of the R2 had the same number as the one of a Gpz1100B2. I orderd a chain for an R2 and it fitted. The difference between the two was 2 chainlinks. The number of teeth of the sprockets was the same for the two bikes. The difference in lenght of the swingarms was about 1 to 1,5 cm. Another lesson learned!

My German import B2 came without a chain guard. After searching and seeing some damaged/butchered ones advertised I managed to get a NOS one off evilbay for £185. Something will turn up if you are prepared wait. Had to make the rear end securing bracket as this is where its very flexi and subject to chain damage.

Hi,if you’re interested on Kz rider.com there’s a post from a guy that’s 3D printed an exact copy of a gpz1100b2 chainguard giving all dimensions etc to have one made up if you have access to a3D printer.The post is from march 2023 howardhb is his log in name.

I managed to get one on FB a few months back but it got lost in the post. I got a refund, but after reading this i am gutted. Didn't realise how hard even 11B guards were to get!
