Kickstart conundrum

				Folks;
Most times the bike (Z1R) starts on the electric foot, but occasionally it doesn't - so it's got a good old fashioned kickstart fitted as well. (I know, fix the problem, but I had a spare kicker lying around...) The new trick is this - the kickstart will turn the engine over happily without the clutch lever being pulled, as per expected. If I pull the clutch lever in to start the bike, the kickstart swings easily but doesn't turn the engine over - so no go! Obviously something is not being engaged/staying disengaged when the clutch is operated. Anyone know what before I delve into the manual? Any and all ideas gratefully received.

 OBVIOUSLY the kickstart won't engage with the clutch lever in.
