Anyone out there able to advise on the tech difficulty of replacing a worn spline gear shift rod on a 1977 Z1000

Gear lever and sprocket cover off ( Can leave the clutch cable on )
Drive chain unhooked and Front sprocket off.
Disconnect neutral switch wire and then transcover off.
After that the selector shaft simply unhooks off the shift drum and slides out.
1/2 hour job once you know what you are doing.

Supplementary question please. The on line manual says not to remove the shift rod more than 40mm out of its home position as the shift or the shift forks inside the gearbox will fall to the bottom of the pan necessitating removal of the oil pan. Is this correct please.

The reason to change the shift rod is the spline appears worn creating a loose fitting gear shift pedal. The selling garage tells me this is understandable given the age of the bike (professionally restored in 2016!) and just keep retightening it rather than properly fix the problem. After a short ride round country lanes with many gear changes it returns to being loose. Surely this should be a tight cosy fit and not work loose at all. Thanks for your understanding in advance.

Take the gear lever off tighten the bolt slightly and run a hacksaw blade through the gap this will then allow the clamp to tighten up slightly more which should then grip the shaft.

The shift rod the manual is referring to is not the splined selector shaft you want to replace but the shaft that locates the gear selector forks.
It is not connected to the splined shaft so proceed as advised previously.

I've used Weaver's method to slightly widen the slot in the gearshift lever, to allow it to grip the splined shaft tighter. It's worked for 20k + miles so far

Small hacksaw blade and tiny file worked a treat thanks. Now snug fit and no movement. Also thanks for the additional info on the gear selectors. Great support.
