The gears are definitely in the neutral position, having checked full 1 to 5 movement by spinning gear with drill and going up and down the box with the gear lever.
My question is, the shift drum face position looks at odds with the pics in the manual. The metal gap is at 9 o’clock where as it is about 7 o’clock in the manual pics.
Is this right?
(Engine is 1980 Mk2)

If you have a look at my post below yours theres lots of advice with photos on my similar issue. The dimple on your plate looks identical position to mine and now my Neutral switch works perfectly (it didnt before as plate 180 deg out)
To confirm temp re fit outer case and shine torch into Neutral switch hole dimple should be lined up with hole exactly.

Checked as per Gray’s suggestion, looks good to me, lines up exactly with the sensor hole.
