Surprise

#1 PostAuthor: krbdude » Tue Jul 30, 2024 5:27 pm

Got my Z1000a1 out this morning , no clutch , floppy clutch lever . Ok i thought snapped cable or nipple come off the end . Stripped the cover off and no problem there , must be the other side . Moved the bike over in the garage and removed the cover , removed the bolts & springs & pressure plate . Well bugger me through my oilskins ! !
The nut and the end of the input shaft fell out . I was only out on it yesterday for a sunny blast , no problems at all , apart from dropping my helmet on the garage floor :D . Never heard of that before . Sooooo i'm on the lookout for a input / first motion shaft . Kind Regards Keith
Cheers chaps .

Hello Keith, it seems like there is not much help on offer here !
The part number for the shaft is 13127-042
It looks like there are a number of buying options.
A complete used gear box could probably be found for similar money.
The challenge we all face however is our 45 to 50 year old motorcycle parts and their unknown history and potential abuse by multiple previous owners !
If you've got an "owned from new" "one careful owner" Zed there I'd be straight on the phone to Kawasaki to complain about faulty material !
I personally don't agree that it's a good idea to use high power impact wrench / guns on hardened steel gear shafts however - you just don't know who's done what down the years !!

Agree with Dave, rattle guns are a terrible idea on hardened components.
The contact wear marks on the touching surfaces of the nut and thrust washer appear to both be un-even. Is there something bent there?
