recommendation for mag wheel repair.

#1 PostAuthor: Z1streetfighter71 » Mon Oct 28, 2024 1:01 pm

Does anyone know of any reputable aluminum mag wheel repair places that they have used before? preferable with good results. I have a front 19" wheel that has a large dent and rip in the rim that will need straightening and welding. Rang a few places in Ireland and "cars only" and rear sportbike wheels at a push. Im in no real hurry with it but want it done right...bit of a rare wheel. Iv had it on my wheel balancer and its straight apart from the dent in the rim.

Not sure I would trust a repaired wheel regardless of rarity.
What makes it rare? Post a wanted ad, never know what's lurking in sheds.

Repairs are done on wheels all the time but only on cars around me, there is a place in Dublin but id rather send it to a specialist and pay good money for good work. Its rare Warren, one of the rarest around. This is the damage, looks worse than it is, its high quality and nice and thick cast aluminum. As for the make of the wheel its for a Z1..it a bit cryptic but if you know you know.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wheel looks like a Mick Grant 7 Star item. Had those on my manic H1F 500 in 1979-82 originally made to suit a Z650.

This looks to be a cast alloy wheel so regardless of what it is you've got if your desperate to have it be prepared to spend if you want it fixed so its safe. Cleaned properly, heated ( whole wheel ) reshaped with appropriate tooling - not a vice and mallet , prepped and welded , heated again for stress relief, inspected and adjusted if required again with heating followed by some weld NDT integrity inspection. That should get you a serviceable wheel if you chosen welders a top bloke.

Very close on the make but lets say Mick Grant would have got these off the OG in Japan (HAINDY). Yea looking for a repair shop that will do all of the above and not some fella in a shed with a bottle jack. If anyone knows a company please let me know before i go to google and google reviews.

I wouldn't care how well whoever says they fixed that or how rare it was I wouldn't ride a bike knowing it had been like that.

Thanks Chris, they look proper professional. Some lads in the VJMC have given me the name of a place in Dublin that a few have used and were very happy with. Either way ill ask the procedure for repairing either way and the one that seems to know their shit the better will get the work regardless of cost. Thanks again Chris.

I think you are being a tad over cautious !!!! a proper good weld is stronger that the material round it, so a good repair will be safe. ive removed tyres and found a crack in an ally wheel and it could of been like that for many miles !!!
