Hi trying to balance my carb with a Morgan carb balancer the problem is the large tickover adjusting screw is out in fact it’s not touching and my tickover is too high and I can’t turn it down what have I done wrong.
Should I have set them up off the bike first.

You likely have one or more individual slide adjusters set too high .

have you got enough slack in the cables ?

I didn’t set them up before I put them on the bike maybe I need to remove them and do that. By slide adjusters I assume you mean the slotted screw with the lock nut on which I think I am right in thinking that’s what you adjust to balance the carbs unlike the later ones where you take the tops off this is a 75 Z1B.

Yes to the adjusters with the lock nut.

Yes to the slide adjusters with lock nuts which are accessible without removing the carb tops and as can be seen in your pic the ones on #3 and #4 carbs are quite far apart regarding thread travel when there shouldn't really be more than half a turn or so difference unless there is something else throwing the vac readings out such as a manifold air leak etc.

put the vacuum balancer on it and see which cylinder has the least vacuum- that will be the carb slide that's too open ( and hence needing its adjuster adjusted)

Can some one confirm for me tha all 4 carbs on z1B carb slide adjusters are adjustable there is not one that’s fixed that you adjust the others too

Only early versions of the Z1 VM28SC carbs had a register carb which was number 2.
These have a plain cap instead of the screw and nut.
Later ones all had adjusters which yours should have.
