I am interested to know if anyone in Zed land has done their own crankshaft rebuild? I have just stripped one down to get a feel for what's involved, it's no use as it has rust on big end journals and the outboard ends. I have a good crankshaft that I aim to rebuild and weld as it goes together. I clocked the middle section of the crank in the lathe and it was 5 thou out, so I tried the copper mallet on it and got it to less than 1 thou out, before I pulled it completely apart. I think I have sourced the correct size loose rollers to re-load the conrod bearings and main bearings, I am just hoping my "good" crankshaft doesn't have any serious wear or any rust damage when it gets stripped.
Also, does anybody know if its possible to buy crankshaft parts ? I guess they must be available as the likes of Applebee's and Debben's must get them from somewhere? Cheers, Mick

The crankshaft components were never available as seperate parts and any rebuild service was mainly focused on stripping ,truing and welding an existing good crank with any worn parts either being substituted from donor cranks or worst case a new crank was used.
There is now a company in Japan called Inoue Boring which due to demand makes new rods and has had new bearings made in bulk from an oem supplier to rebuild these cranks but again if the crank pins etc are beyond service limits or damage another suitable crank has to be sourced for the rebuild.
As far as i know their new rods etc are only available as part of their own rebuild service and not for sale individually to the public.

Hi Rob, yes I had seen them on the net, I thought the rods and roller bearings were available to buy, I hadn't realised they were only available as part of the rebuild service. I did consider buying a new crankshaft from cmnsl, but they don't seem to be available, the outer bearings and races seem unavailable too, hence I plan on re-loading the original cages. I blame Mr Millyard for encouraging me to have a go! Cheers, Mick
