Restoring the colour to faded plastic parts

#1 PostAuthor: popsA1 » Mon Aug 04, 2025 4:39 pm

Hi all, I have a pair of GPz handle bar switches where the colour has faded badly. In an attempt to restore their colour, I’ve tried polishing them but that’s not very effective. I’ve seen YouTube vid’s where they’ve used a heat gun, but I can see that will only end in tears.
Does anyone have a recommendation to restore their colour?

I recently revived the black plastic inner and outer rear mudguards on my J. I TCut them first to remove the bloom then polished and buffed using the product in the link below.
To say I was impressed with the end result is an understatement. Came out almost like new.

I have same switches as you to do. Not sure how the printed text is going to cope though.
Wear gloves, as pigment is a barsteward to wash off.

Autoglym colour restorer is the easiest way to do it. I use it for all the old faded black plastics.
2000 wet n dry to take the surface bloom off then polish with colour restorer.
You well get high gloss black shiny as a shiny thing so if your not after that ignore me

Be careful which colour restorer you use i think it was back to black i tried and it fetched the decals off.

Back to black is not a colour restorer it's basically a solvent that dissolves a very fine layer of the plastics.

Colour restorer is a ultra fine t cut type liquid. T cut is super abrasive compared to colour restorer.

Thanks for the advice guys. I had used t-cut on the horn button but wasn’t getting anywhere. In the end I used a wire wheel in a low speed Dremel to remove the bloom. This was good at cleaning up the grooves and left a slightly polished finish. The bumper black works well on the switch housing. It does darken the text a bit but as mine has almost gone anyway, I’m not too fussed.
Thanks again.
