I know this subject has been posted about, but is anyone running an electronic tacho with success? There is mention of zpower ones packing up or fluctuations after so many miles. I will be using a j type head and want a tacho that matches the early type speedo. Does anyone know if the z1000j one would fit and match? Any advice much appreciated. Cheers Mick

Hello Mick, unless someone can offer a better idea then I'm going to say you could make one yourself !
Its a long time ago and I'm short on detail but I put together an electronic tacho for one of my old Zeds myself.
You need to find a donor electronic tacho and carefully strip out the dial face / needle and mechanism and do the same with your old Zed clock and then make up some small brackets to mount the electronic tacho into the Zed case. Obviously you need to find a tachometer with a dial face very similar diameter to the old Zed item. This was an easy thing to do when we still had local breakers who would let you search through stuff.

Anyhow, it can be done.
The one I made worked fine for years while I owned it.
You'll end up with a Tacho with a higher redline - if you're putting a J head on an early bottom end you're probably putting in some performance cams I guess so you'll have your own idea for a red line anyway.
As I say, it was a long time ago but I'm going to guess that maybe I used a tacho from an 80's GPZ900R - I COULD BE WRONG ! You'll need to check / measure / find the right tacho and then sort out the electrical trigger wire for the tacho - connect this up to one of your ignition colis (Low Tension side) BUT DO YOUR OWN CHECKS !

Thanks Dave, I had thought about grafting another tacho into the old housing, I've read about smiths instruments being used, I was hoping to just buy one as I have plenty of other bits needing making and yes, I'm using unitrack camshafts in the build, so I'm not sure what the redline should be?
