swing arm sleeve fit

#1 PostAuthor: z2.john » Fri Jun 05, 2009 3:58 pm

Has anyone ever had to ream the swing arm sleeves after fitting new ones? Mine were a very tight fit and have probably closed up the bore very slightly so that now the new bushes won't slide in.
I've not had this problem on previous bikes.
if reaming is an option, would the club have one for loan?
Thanks,
John

IR35 (John), firstly, just to clear-up your nomenclature,
The swingarm bearing (cast steel or phosphor bronze) is a press fit into the swingarm. The "sleeves" are hardened ground steel with an oil/grease grove spiral cut in them, that are sandwiched by two caps (with o-rings) and a distance-piece. These sleeves remained locked in position by tightening the pivot bolt. Never allow the inner part of the sleeve to become a bearing for the pivot bolt.

What happens often, is the bearing, because of the varying press fits or not being cleared of paint or burrs, becomes slightly smaller and needs a scraping or reaming to allow the sleeve to be a firm sliding fit in the bearing.

To have your swingarm functioning correctly, it is critical, to always check that the distant-piece locks the sleeves, caps and pivot bolt .
