Finally got my Z1R project home in September after waiting over year for the previous owners probate to be completed.
I bought two bikes from the family, the Z1R and nice 1986 Suzuki GSXR1100 which needed the least amount of work so I started on that first which I finished in mid December.
I started on the Z1R last week, washed off 34 years worth of dust then fitted a new battery to see if the engine turned over and if the lights work, the engine span over nicely and all the lights worked.
First job remove the tank and empty out over a gallon of 30 year old petrol, which had been turned a dark orange by the rusty tank.
Next, remove the carbs and dismantle them to check the jet sizes and make them ready for ultrasonic cleaning. What a pain of a job to undo the screws holding the inlet rubbers onto the air box, getting them back in is going to be worse, surely there’s got to be an easier way to remove the carbs, any ideas on how this can be done will be gratefully received.
Checking the jets and they all seemed to be the right sizes except the main jet which had been changed to a plastic one size 120, maybe because of the straight through silencer even though that seems a bit big, I ordered a Keyster repair kit that seems to have all the seals, o-rings, gaskets etc.
I tried stripping the gold paint off the wheels with thinners and paint stripper but, it’ll take for ever, think I’ll get them blasted and repainted, that’s the next job.
I bought a nice original 4 into 1 down pipes and collector box but, I’m still looking for a good replica silencer, if anybody knows where I can get one from, that will be very useful.
