My 'new' Z900 is Phil Churchett's old A4

#1 PostAuthor: Andrew_s » Mon May 15, 2017 12:35 pm

I posted this in the Members' Area, although maybe I should have posted here too, so here goes:

floydsz1 wrote:Well a sad day, Phil's A4 has just left for its new home, but also happy that's it's gone to someone (club member) who will look after it and use it.

After a 550 mile round trip today, I am the proud new owner (custodian) of PRE 2R, Phil Churchett's A4. This bike is exactly the type of Z900 I wanted i.e. a UK bike with an interesting, albeit very sad, story and one that I can ride and enjoy without worrying I’ll add too many miles or it will pick up a spec of dirt.

I fully understand and respect the need for the bike to stay in the club and my intention is to clean it, service it, do a few little jobs that need doing and attend as many club events as possible - it will not be hidden away.

My plan is to create history and photographic folder/book that will stay with the bike as it seems there is not a lot of documented history of Phil’s Z900 and it would be a shame if what is known fades over time. I tried to find out as much as I could about Phil and his Z900 over the last few weeks and whilst I never knew Phil, I’m beginning to feel like I did.

If any of PRE 2R's previous owners are reading this can you please PM me as I would like to pick your brains on the bike's history for inclusion in the folder/book.

An interesting and spooky coincidence is that my wife is also called Bev and I too have a son called Matthew.

I know it was a very difficult decision for Peter to let PRE 2R go, but I would like to thank him for trusting me with Phil's A4 - it's gone to a good home and is in safe hands.

The FireBlade has been sold to my very good mate Dave Gilroy (club member) who has added it to his growing collection:

Congratulations!
That's a very good honest bike and I'm sure Phil would approve of your intentions for it.

How many owners are recorded on log book ?

I remember Phil telling me many years ago that he sold it and as per normal regretted it and luckily was able to buy it back at a later date when it was traded in at Kustom Kawasaki in Hednesford where it came from originally if I think !

I think it is correct that it was first sold by Hednesford Kawasaki, my first KH250 was PRE9R and that came from there.

Thanks guys!

Been cleaning it today and it looks very spangly - hopefully I will take a first ride out to the Pinewood Cafe Bike Night, Wokingham tomorrow evening if I can finish work early enough.

Yes, Phil was the second owner when he bought the A4 in 1983 with 20,000 miles, he then PX'd it for a GPZ750 turbo but got knocked off that and bought his A4 back in 1984 from Kawasaki City, Birmingham (Jerry thinks he may have PDI'd it when new) - so that accounts for four owners (Phil twice). I believe Phil owned his A4 for 31 years.

There is no record in the file of who owned it after Phil, but Peter (Floydsz1) was the 8th, so it would be good to find out who the 3 club members are who owned it after Phil and before Peter to unpick the history and learn more about the bike's story.

Thanks Paul, I must admit I'm really looking forward to riding it tomorrow and in the weeks, months and years to come - I've waited 40 years for this!

Great to see that the A4 is staying in the club and it still looks fantastic.

I don't know if you are aware Andrew but DVLA used to do a service whereby for £5 you can get a print out of all previous v5's for your vehicle. I did it with my Z1b when I bought it in 2001.

Thanks Dave, yes I've used the DVLA V5 service before but unless you have clear justification for wanting the info they'll usually decline to provide. I'll try them if all else fails.

I now know Ian Broomhead sold Phil's A4 to Peter (Floydsz1), but don't know his forum name to contact him, so if anyone can advise me I'd be most grateful.

Andrew, the only stipulation from DVLA at the time was that you had to be the registered keeper to get the details.

Dave, a few years ago the DVLA were very helpful and provided me with photo copies of V5s/log books etc, but I tried again last year for owner info on my FireBlade and just got a 'FO' tablet.

I've PM's Baz (Ian Broomfield) and hopefully he'll be able to fill in some bike's history and also tell me the name of the club member he bought it off - that just leaves the member who bought Phil's Z900 off his wife, Bev.

In any event will complete the form for the DVLA and see where that takes me, as it is useful to have copies of V5s and log books etc for the file.
