Thanks for all the input. The bike is definitely a keeper but I say that about all of them.

very nice indeed, I went to see this 550 last night on behalf of a mate, it was very original, ran lovely, not sure how high he will bid but it is making good money

Enjoying the love for Z500s and 550D1s here! The D1 was a rapid little bike. I too had a Z400J then went up to a Z750-L1. Wish I'd started with the 500 though - I'd just started working for my local Kawasaki dealer in 1980, and we did have a 500 in stock...
See attached pic of the 400 and the 750 - had the two together briefly as I upgraded. I'm sure people on here are like me and like to see old photos of the bikes we had back then. Maybe?
