Re: Tax
I spotted the tailpiece and the Ltd seat and exhausts and is that a 1000P rear mudguard ? So close to the end of production its got to be one of the last ever "real" Z's ever built - so surely a keeper. Are there many miles on the clock? I'm guessing they wanted to try out the new 1000P fairing...... or maybe did they run out of 1000C ones abd being so clise to end of production, fitted the New one !! Who knows. I'm thinking its hard to imagine that they made ALL the special Police parts in 2 locations USA AND Japan and I'm guessing they might have shipped parts from the US much like they shipped engines from Japan, which leads me to another question ... the C4 frame has made a JKA prefix but the actual number starts with a 5 and I always understood that frame numbers startin '5' were USA made ! Do you think maybe they shipped frames ? They'd have been about stopped making A4's in Japan by then ! .... real nice c4 either way and yes, I took the fairing off mine - great for 55mph in a straight line but not much good for much else...
Re: Tax
You are right P mudguard as no C4 one left around in white and I am certainly not painting a chrome one, I have put the tail piece and seat and removed the fairing as most of the bike looked like this when I got it

Been changing the gear lever shaft today as I busted it . BIG thanks to Hobbo for the replacement..
only to find that when I stripped it down it looked different ,now going through all my manuals it looked like it was a shaft drive bottom end which upon chatting with Dave at ZPOWER confirmed that they used up all the parts and put a different final drive cover on but not to worry were back together.
while were on your opinions on fitting this to Ponch for a while
wont need a siren

Re: Tax
Hi Ted, that 4 into 1 pipe looks a little unusual !The distance / length of straight pipe between the exhaust port flange and the first bend where the pipes turn down in front of the motor looks a good bit longer than usual - not necessarily an issue but make sure its going to clear that big old Police front mudguard ! My own thought is that all other things being equal, it night look a bit out of place with the rest of the Police equipment - particularly those foot boards ..... however, if your thinking about removing those too, which will improve cornering clearance and go a long way to sorting the abrupt / heavy gear change which you get with that big old toe/heel - external mechanism, the pie starts to look more at home ! Your C4 has no brake pedal/brake cylinder mounts on the main frame though - but its not a showstopper. Lots of these 1000c's were standardised / civilianised after de-commisioning from the Police. You loose the Chips look but get a much more usable ike !
Re: Tax
Dave its only going on for a bit of daft, it will clear all bits. but the exhausts on it are bespoke one offs made in the 90.s by a earlier owner,
there is no police equipment left on its all been whipped off, the frame and all running gear is still C4/A.
And you need those floor boards to let you know when your too far over as the metal fin beneath them sprays sparks behind you
I have not had any handling faults .
For in fo the pipe is a 1976 Alpha in ceramic coat made for Z,s my aim is
to fit it for the ride Squires on Fri to meet up

Re: Tax
Not so sure about the exhaust Ted. According to period ad's alfa exit on the offside. Unless they were bike manufacturer specific?

Re: Tax
Yes, piper and laser were offside. The alfa ad shows a Hodna but Charlie has an alfa on his 650 which is nearside exit so maybe nearside for khi and offside for Hodna. Vertical for suzuki and straight forward for yammy?

Re: Tax
Hi Ted, fold up footboards with steel fins on the underside edge - great fun around town - especially after dark ! I do recall some handling "challenges" though ! The radio and siren / lights were gone but most of the rest, including the fork mounted screen was still in place.... on B roads, the kind of 45 - 65mph bends that were just normal riding along on a normal Z could be quite "entertaining". I thought maybe it was weight distribution or maybe the screen but those kind of bends could bring on quite alarming understeer, the frontend would run wide and the bike just tried to go straight on, the faster you went, the worse it got. I'm wondering if the remedy was the new frame mounted fairing perhaps ? Stripping off ALl the Police parts and fitting proper tyres sorted it too !
Regarding the Alfa, a lot of 4 into 1's were producing noise test readings well into the 90 Db's - some exceeding 100 Db in tests back in the day, so if you want people to hear you comming, you'll have no problem !

Re: Tax
Thanks for the answer on the ALFA , I must agree changing to the fairing was an improvement ,the fact it remained fitted and unchanged for nearly 14/15 years must prove something,
but mines off for good I think.

Re: Tax
Hello Ted, interesting discussion / feedback about fairings ! If I ever get around to putting mine back together I think I'll be leaving the screen off as well. Take it easy with those footboards ..... Dave
