Why do those frames always seem to rot at the same point around the side stand ?

I like GB theory that water collects in the frame at the lowest ponit and rust through in time......had a 900f that did the same thing

TLC, coz damp gets in & if left on the side stand (not using the centre stand ) the water collects at that exact point...

Right, I spent yesterday afternoon trying to work out how to fit my front & rear end's on. I must admit I got quite down, realising the amount of work in front of me.
Went out again today & started to tackle one job at a time. Today it was marrying my Kawasaki ZX7R wheels & discs to my Suzuki Hayabusa forks & TL1000 yokes. (I'm already thinking I should rename this project Heinz 57!) Both bikes use a 25mm spindle, which helps a lot. I had hoped to use the ZX7R speedo drive,but that wouldn't allow the wheel to fit centrally. So the decision was made to bin the mechanical speedo drive. I knocked up a couple of spacers to allow the wheel to sit centrally

Here you can see where the larger spacer has replaced the speedo drive, I will source a dust/oil seal from simplybearings.com & poke a bit of silicone in the cut outs for the original speedo drive.


I used my stipped down calipers to line up the wheel/discs.

My lack of mechanical speedo drive has meant that I cant use the GPz Unitrac clocks that I had planned to. I am now looking at using one of these little beasties. Anyone had any experience with 'em

the j and B frames have a fault that they tear the frame around the side stand. kawasaki used to replace the frames under warranty. ALL of mine have needed repairing around this area. the best fix is to weld a plate from the bottom of the tube to the side stand mount aswell. if you do not the frame will crack and start to rot or in my mates case break completely with all his camping gear on and smash in to the ground.

Spent a bit of time rebuilding the $499 calipers $499 calipers this afternoon.
These are the bodies after a dip in the ultrasonic cleaner.

Using a cotton bud I wiped some clean brake fluid into the lower fluid seal groove. I don't think this helps with sealing, but it does lube the seals & make them slip in easily

After fitting the fluid seals I used another cotton bud to thinly smear some red rubber grease into the dust seal groove. This hopefully will stop the bare aluminium behind these seals corroding & expanding pushing the dust seals out of their grooves & gripping the piston so tightly it won't move back into the caliper body.

Here are the bodies all fitted with seals. The excess rubber grease has been removed.

Next, lube the piston & seals with some clean brake fluid. They push in quite easily.

Here they are with all pistons fitted.

Here is the end result!
A couple of things to note.
1. I have used the original seals, with the exception of one new dust seal (Z Power) I have done this on several occasions & not had any problems. If in doubt you could leave the brake lever fastened back to the bars overnight (once bled) to check for any leaks.
2. I find Tokico calipers from suzuki's seem to have an anodised aluminium piston, as opposed to Kawasaki Tokico's that have a chrome plated steel piston. Needless to say, the chrome plating doesn't weather as well as the anodising.... Worth bearing in mind if you're looking for a second hand set!

For those of you that wanted it.......... The grinder in action!

I've cut these off as they foul my swinger (I am going to use this frame to mock things up, then use a replacement for the final build).
I have promised these to someone here, but I can't for the life of me remember who I had to deleate a load of PM's & the details dissapeared then! Please contact me again & I'll get 'em in the post.
