Engine casings together, all nice & snug....

Assembled pistons & rings...... as these are second hand from a good source I checked the ring gaps in the bores, and they were all just over 0.010"...



A good way of tackling this delicate process is... (Wiseco)

1 - Fit one circlip in the piston. You'll have to work out which side is going to be easiest to fit the gudgeon pin (wrist pin) before you do this

2 - Now fit the oil rings, the wiggly bit first bthen the thin plain rings each side.

3 - Now fit the middle ring (N facing upwards).

4 - Fit top ring! Place ring gaps staggered so that none are in line.

5 - Push the gudgeon pin part way into the piston (opposite end that the circlip is in ) and offer the piston up to the conrod, making sure the arrow on the piston crown is pointing forward.

6 - Fit circlip in other recess.

Chinese spanners... Them ain't ordinary spanners, thems is Halfords Finest mertic assortment.. me freebee's are still in the box

Broke me ironing board last week so got some spare time to dedicate to the RedZed..

I know most of you will be more than able in completing this task, but it may produce some useful discussions (or p*ss taking)

Now the psitons are fitted, need to get the barrels back on

They're Z900 bored to the max - 1045 So there's naff all chamfer to guide the piston & rings home

So, as I ain't got a ring compressor set, I've taken Ralphy's (& others) advice on board & made me own set

Instead of a metal/tin band to wrap around the pistons, i decided to cut up a tough plastic drinks bottle (like they use on the Tour De France ). The advantage is the plastic is tough enough for the job, & won't scratch or damage the pistons or rings

And with the aid of some nylon zip ties, the centre pistons are ready. its best to start with the middle ones as the last pair are more difficult and will be easier to get at





The barrels can be offered up and with a liberal dose of fresh engine oil in the bores & pistons, they are carefully lowered



Outer pair - same thing.... and it all went OK

Time for the Head now...

Got one of those cheap Athena full gasket sets... most of the stuffs OK, but the 2 piece head gasket has the cam tunnel O ring, which is a tad small, so I used some goo to hold it whilst fitting the head



Also, note the CLYMER manual for head bolts sequence

The modern softy drinks cans are made of ally so tooo soft. Biscuit tins are perfect. Trouble is when Mark has entered the bickie frenzy the tins are destroyed with his teeth marks in is desperation to satisfy his addiction. This is why he has to look for other materials.

His good lady wife apologised profusely today, when myself and the Current Bride visited the Pigford Ranch. We warned of our intention to visit and she was sent to the shops and came back with several hundred weight of biscuits, but when we arrived there was nought but a ravaged tinplate pile where previously there had been a yard high pile of selection box tins. His dog had discovered a custard cream that had been missed by the rabid piglet, but before it had a chance to close it's jaws piglet fought it for possession of the sweet meat.
