Finally got around to sorting one of my MK2s

Now that I've cleared other projects, I've finally started on a recommission of one of my MK2s.
Bought the bike 5 years ago from the original owner. It's covered 8500km and was stored in a garage for at least 30 years.
Runs really well, but tatty in a few areas. The engine does need a repaint or major touch up and I'm going to look at doing that without an engine strip.

I'm also close to starting a Sanctuary MK2 build. Been collecting parts for years and have most of it now.

With a low milage Mk2 as well preserved as the one you have there, I'd strongly recommend careful conservation with considered / carefully executed re-touching and restoring of the original finishes wherever possible. These are rare bikes, especially an original and too many times they're torn apart and re-finished and polished to a state far removed from how they originally rolled out of the factory.
It will only ever be original once !
It'll be good to see how it progresses !!

Agreed. I'm going to see how well I can touch up what's there. The bodywork is very decent but has non-standard paintwork for some reason though.

Probably no surprise about the none standard paintwork ! The Mk2 wasn't over popular when it was new - least of all the red ones. Blue, though less common seemed to be more liked. A great many got a paint job as a matter of course - but then again so did a lot of other bikes back then. It is what it is as they say - if its a tidy enough job then its all good !
Any pictures when its done will be appreciated I'm sure.

Looks very presentable ! Certainly not worth loosing any sleep over.
It's not a modern "decal" kit job (obviously) but vey few bikes done with those - some presumably professionally - actually look "right" or match the original. These days, as you mention yourself, there'll be many who wont know the difference anyway ! If it's a keeper or one to sell on, either way I'd just leave it as it is if it were mine. Hard to find decent Mk2's these days, especially one in such original condition.
