Rebuild Rims
I forgot to polish the cam cover ends and cant do it til I get back to work
next week
so instead of putting the engine in the frame I decided to lace up the rims
with the new spokes from Z power ready for truing up
later when I get a stand sorted out.
Already restored and polished/painted the wheel hubs all ready to lace up and set finger
tight ready to set the offsets etc. Got to say the nipples dont look as
yellow as they do in the Z power photo and dont really know how yellow the original are supposed
to look which is what I am looking for. Passed up
on fitting stainless spokes for this reason, just hoping these spokes are authentic looking.
Just putting the inner spokes in first here.
and about half an hour later all laced up
ready for truing
I think they look great
I am well pleased with the rechroming from Prestige

Nice job your doing there Dave
Cam cover
Itching to put the engine back in the frame
but since I havent got a bike
lift I prefer to have the motor all set up while it is on the bench rather
than lots of bent over work on the engine in the frame. I will also be
employing the "frame over engine" method of putting it in so cant really
bolt much onto the frame till the engine is in. I am having to wait an extra
couple of days to finish setting the valve clearances because I dont seem
to be able to read a micrometer correctly
and ordered one of the shims
the wrong size so will have to wait for the correct size coming before the
motor is complete. Got to say the shim exchange scheme the club runs
is a god send,
Back at work after the holidays now so was able to
polish up the cam cover ends and the fork tops. Dont think the fork tops
were polished up originally but a bit extra bling cant hurt
Feels like a real hurdle getting the engine back in the frame but once its
done I think things will finally begin to move on a lot quicker.
Here is a before and after of the cam cover and fork tops.
Next time I post pics it might be starting to look like a bike!

Well done so far Dave,
All's looking good so far. If you re-fit main stand and lower fork yokes before you drop the frame on the engine - you can stand it straight up on the main stand once you have popped the front forks into place - save marking that nice frame of yours!!
Main stand is a pain to fit later.
Good luck from Mark

Looking good dave keep it up
when you see the 2 pics of the master cylinder together
its amazing how different they look.
When i first took it to my anodiser for stripping he couldnt believe the colour of it and the exscuse you were given why it was that shade of as dave james put it "grey primer"
The whole things looking good dave cant wait to see it finished

Hello Ray, for just about every bit of chrome on the bike, except exhausts, to be re done came to about £440.
I have to say tho that all the bits were in pretty good condition so there wouldnt have
been too much prep work to do before plating. I had all the nuts and bolts that needed zinc
plating done somewhere else. (Steve Smethurst) but thats another story. I can send you a
break down of cost of each item that was re-chromed if you need it.
Regards Dave

thats not to bad for chromework, did you have the paint done local ?, I have a uk z1a which is in its original condition and sometimes I think its to original to restore even though the old girl looks a bit tired, she is in the original paint -brown and orange and its my fav z1a colour for sure
Hello Ray,
Mark Hutchinson is the guy for paint work. I can personally recommend the quality of his work and he has been entrusted
by many club members of this club for there pride and joy projects.
He is based in pontefract and his details should be on this site as he too is a member and Z1 enthusiast.
