Why not, sounds good to me! Saying that, I do take the view that I MUST have in mind what I need and not what I think could be useful in the future.....Spending/hoarding became a past habit?
But I'll be in the queue for the next one as you never know what turns up. And I never seem to get around in less than four hours.

Indeed Mick, great pub quiz question I'd say? They'll be more than a few here that could add to this 'theme' I'm sure......lol.

Frame/Seat/Tail detail.
I need one of the ST fans here to post a picture of the seat/hinge area as I cant i.d what is actually missing here. Nothing obvious to me in the Clymer manual. Pics show the bodge up from the previous keeper. Any help appreciated. I will try and copy/fabricate the original fittings one way or another.....Cheers.

A possible mod for another day, the Z650 Duck Tail, loosely fitted here, looks good. The seat and light unit would need changing too.
For sometime later maybe, this loosely fitted Z650 Duck Tail fits well and looks pretty good. Will only need a minor bracket mod sorting.
The tail piece is self tapped to this bodge, both sides, should be bolted in like the two (hidden) in the rear part of the tail. Not pretty, and again, I need a picture of what's missing.

Aztec, best pic I could find of how things should look;
You have already sussed that what you have is a bodge under there. You should have a spring loaded bar as well which sits under a clip when the seat is up to stop it falling back down. The brackets are like loops which the brackets on the seat sit either side of and through this goes the L-shaped pin and a split pin to secure it goes through that.
And for what it's worth I would leave the ST tail on there. I must be the only one who appreciates the squared off brutish look of these bikes.

Thanks, nice shot Redbeard. I took this tablet outside and sussed it. Why or where the original bits were hacked off, who knows. Yours looks super smart under there, and, airbox aside, I don't have too much missing by the looks. I'll get bashing and grinding on the next session, and although my arc/mig skills are a little limited, I should make it good again.
Take a peak at this link too, the colour contrast on this other Z confirms it nicely.Very simple design I note.

Re: Your shot Redbeard, your tank fixing being original, you'll note mine has been done before, in pic 6, and has had to have a piece of square tubing welded in. Again, not pretty, but works OK.

I'm undecided on the boxy ST tail. Big K' did all sorts of shapes through the 70'/80's, some gorgeous, some hideous, but I still don't think the ST/MkII was there best effort. Same with the tank too. But, from the special's I've seen in web land, the paint job is what really makes a difference to those 'brutish lines' you mention.
Time will tell what look this ST takes on....

I like the paint on your ST I also like the tank / tail on both ST & Mk2 Z's. The Mk2 being my all time fav Big Z if there had been a Mk2 for sale at the time I was looking for a bike I would have bought that instead of the Z900 A4 I have. Saying that I had intending to buy an ST from the place I bought the A4 but it needed to much work for my liking .

The colour of Redbeards ST (above) is very nice, stands out well. My Lime/Gold job is a custom one-off.
The ST and MkII both have there followers. My choice to buy was purely on the price. Personally, the picture on the cover of the Clymer manual, would not sell it to me.They just don't have the kudos or sex appeal of the early models. Saying that, a £5k+ MkII was raved about on here not long back. The models that followed the ST, including the similarly styled 1300, until the last 1100 models, were all different in one way, with Lawson Reps, Ltd's and J/P models, and most production ending up stateside.
I think we'll be seeing less and less of all these 'treasures' on the road. Running costs and high values mean many will just do the local shows, but the majority are being stored away and shipped abroad as 'money in the bank'.
For 2015, it will be interesting to see how many Big Zeds I can snap on my travels.

Indeed! Sad thing is, you rarely see big Zeds, or two-stroke triples either, being ridden like I remember them being ridden in the late 70's......I wonder why
All input welcome. I will update the project pics at some point.
