Been busy today, sorting out a couple of the 'less glamorous' jobs.
First off was to re-fit the generator windings, but more importantly seal the pesky rubber grommet.
The method I use was 'gleaned' from this very website & has worked every time........ So far.
First step is to get it all spotlessly clean. The grommet, & casing benefit from being 'keyed' with a bit of emery paper or something similar.
Next is to apply some sealant. Threebond 1211 was recommended (on here). Other stuff may well work, but this stuff works for me.
Pull the sealant coated wires through the grommet, whilst sliding it into the casing.
I have temporarily fitted the casing, to keep the grommet in place, whilst the sealant goes off. I have put a little bit of polythene between the grommet & engine cases, to stop it all sticking together. I would have fitted it permanently, but I'm still waiting for a new starter ring damper to arrive.

Next job was to tackle the loom..... Another dirty shitty mess.
After a couple of hours with a can of brake cleaner, a lot of the grime was removed.
Most of the old tape was removed, and replaced with some new. I have fitted some new connectors where needed & replaced the insulation sleeves on a lot of others.

Coming together nicely there GB (and quickly) - those shockers look mint
Good tip on the alternater bung, valuable info - i bolted a flat plate to the casing while the sealant went 'off'
Interesting site that Skiffy for odds and sods, nice one!

Keep it going.

Many thanks for those Vic.
Glad you got them, they do look good. The bloke who makes them has joined the site as well, he's doing up a Z650. Wonder what else he does?

Thank's boy's for the encouragement.
After some deliberation on what to do about cylinder head nuts, the one's I had ordered turned up today.
http://www.z1ownersclub.co.uk/forum/vie ... hp?t=22202
So there was no excuse not to fit the head.
Since the motor is completely dry, I pumped a whole can of my 'free' oil into the oilways, I don't know if it will make a lot of difference on the initial start up, but it can't do any harm.
Head on, cams fitted & all timed up. I'll re-check the valve clearances on my next visit. Then I can fit me Toast Racks!

Not managed to progress much in the last week, been busy with Stafford & work.
Can't say the same for Mikey though, I picked up this 'box of bling' a couple of days ago.
Contents include wheel's with polished rims & spokes. I'll be painting these at a later stage, Fork bottoms, will be rebuilt once I get the stantions back from re-chroming. Last but not least is a highly polished, finned points cover.
Electrics are coming on quite nicely....
And finally for today, I fitted me........................................
